![]() Last week we spoke about the possible link between radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RFEMF), such as are emitted by cell/mobile phones, and cancer. We continue the discussion this week. Dr. Ted Gansler, with the full authority of the American Cancer Society (ACS) behind him, confidently assures us that people who worry that there may be an association between cell phone use and cancer are victims of an urban myth. Why, then, does Dr. Gansler feel the need to provide a website address for the Food and Drug Administration Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH), which "offers advice to people concerned about their risk." He continues: "Experts from the CDRH explain practical ways to minimize exposure to radio frequency radiation while using a cell phone. Also, thereís the option of using digital rather than analog telephones." I find this rather strange. If cell phones and other electronic devices are as innocuous as Dr. Gansler asserts then why does he encourage people to learn how to minimize their risk? Dr. Gansler and his ACS colleagues appear to be unaware that the FDAís stated position is that "[i]t is generally agreed that further research is needed to determine what effects actually occur [from RFEMF exposure, ed.] and whether they are dangerous to people" (FDA 2002). ![]() There are hundreds of published articles on the subject of radiofrequency electromagnetic fields and the possible association with diseases including cancer. Scientists in this field primarily must rely on laboratory and epidemiological data (i.e., population-based studies), but these often reach ambiguous or contradictory conclusions. For instance, a recent review by scientists at the Medical College of Wisconsin, Madison, was generally dismissive of a causal link between RFEMF and cancer, calling evidence for such a link "weak." However, while the authors felt that a straightforward cause and effect link remained unproven, the article concluded: "...the existing epidemiology is limited and the possibility of epigenetic effects has not been thoroughly evaluated, so that additional research in those areas will be required for a more thorough assessment of the possibility of a causal connection between cancer and the RF energy from mobile telecommunications" (Moulder 2005). The key word in my opinion is "limited." The bottom line is this: almost all reputable researchers in this area concede that it is really not yet definitively known whether or not radiofrequency electromagnetic fields do increase the risk of cancer. Some people take this as confirmation of their view that such devices are safe. But one would think that while the issue is still very much under investigation it would be wisest for the ACS not to brand concern about RFEMF prematurely as just another "cancer myth." It seems to me to be arrogant to declare the debate closed while the near unanimous opinion in the scientific world is that the issue is still far from settled. Part 3: ![]() Many scientists dismiss the possibility that RFEMFs can cause cancer. But a minority disagrees. Briefly, here are just three of the current and recent studies that have indicated a link between radiofrequency electromagnetic fields and malignancy. In the eyes of some researchers, in fact, "there is a growing amount of evidence about the harmful effects of EMFs [electromagnetic fields, ed.] on the human body, the most dangerous of which is the possible carcinogenic effect." So wrote Israeli scientists in reviewing the overall field in the spring of 2005 (Beniashvili 2005). Drs. Leeka I. Kheifets and C. Chantal Matkin, of the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) in Palo Alto, California agree with many others that "most of the epidemiologic data do not provide strong support for an association between EMF and breast cancer." However they also state that because of the limited statistical power and the possibility of bias in much of the existing data, "it is not possible to rule out a relationship between EMF and breast cancer" (Kheifets 1999). Significantly, EPRI is generally a pro-industry group, which includes almost 1,000 energy producers as members. As of 2001, 27 of its 30-member Board of Directors represented utility companies. Some people turn up their noses at such overtly partisan institutions. But my feeling is that pro-industry researchers would on the whole be less likely than more independent scientists to warn of the potential risks of EMF exposure, so the fact that these researchers acknowledge the possibility of a breast cancer/EMF link is very significant. Again, I want to emphasize that most research in this field concludes that electromagnetic field exposure, at least that emanating from power lines, is harmless. Yet even among this body of literature there are a few disturbing trends in some of the data. For example, in a meta-analysis performed at the University of Cologne, Germany, Prof. Thomas C. Erren found a 12 percent increased risk of cancer in women and a 37 percent increase in men that seemed attributable to EMF exposure. Yet, like most scientists in the field, he adds a note of caution, noting "probable misclassification of exposure and the possible misclassification of the disease itself."(Erren 2001) Scandinavian researchers have identified an increased risk for acoustic neuroma (i.e., a benign tumor of the eighth cranial nerve) in cell phone users, and a slightly increased risk of malignant brain tumors such as astrocytoma and meningioma on the same side of the brain as the cell phone was habitually held. However, the authors of this latter study have acknowledged some methodological concerns, and further investigations are planned in order to determine whether such an association can be definitively established with statistical significance (Hardell 2004 and 2005). Most recently, the aforementioned Dr. Djemal Beniashvili and other scientists at the Edith Wolfson Medical Center, Holon, Israel postulated a link between exposure to power frequency fields and breast cancer in elderly women. They made an extensive study of medical records extending over a period of 26 years, involving the analysis of over 200,000 biopsy and surgery samples. They then compared the breast cancer rates in elderly women from an earlier period (1978-1990) to a more recent period (1991-2003), which has been characterized by a much more extensive use of personal computers (more than 3 hours a day), mobile/cell telephones, television sets, air conditioners and other household electrical appliances. Among the elderly women who developed breast cancer in the first time frame, 19.5 percent were regularly exposed to power frequency fields. But in the more modern period 51.1 percent were so exposed, mainly through the use of personal computers. The authors conclude: "There was a statistically significant influence of EMF [electromagnetic fields, ed.] on the formation of all observed epithelial mammary tumors in Group II." This represented a more than two-fold increase, which was considered highly significant (Beniashvili 2005). Of course, many other environmental factors have changed since the period 1978-1990, but increased environmental exposure to power frequency fields is among the more conspicuous changes to have taken place. And while there is a body of evidence that contradicts the findings of Dr. Beniashvili and his colleagues, again, there are many aspects of this question that remain to be clarified. The issue is far from conclusively settled. It is therefore highly inappropriate for the ACS to deride the misgivings of the public on the question of radiofrequency electromagnetic fields and their possible association with cancer. I have seen the credentials and motivation of those who raise doubts about the safety of RFEMF questioned. However, the researchers who have raised doubts about the safety of RFEMFs are neither avaricious lawyers nor sensation-seeking journalists, but serious scientists, trying to do an important job in a rational, dispassionate way. For example, the senior author of this Israeli paper, Dr. Itzhak Zusman, is himself the author of 139 PubMed-listed articles, 80 of which relate to cancer. S. Ozen, who coauthored the paper on EMFs and thyroid function, is similarly well established, with 212 PubMed-listed papers to his credit. ![]() While it is far from clear that there is a cause and effect relationship between cell phones (or RFEMF in general) and cancer, too little is known about the actual effects to dismiss the possibility out of hand, the way the ACS does. Caution would therefore be advised. History is filled with examples of "perfectly safe" environmental factors that later turned out to be harmful, if not disastrous. As a child, I badgered my mother to let me have my feet fluoroscoped in the local shoe store. A cautious lady, she limited my exposure to a single occasion during which I got a brief and eerie glimpse of the bones in my feet. These machines were later banned after some were found to be pumping out as much as 116 roentgens of radiation - a huge dose for a trivial purpose. As a young man I also listened to advertisements touting the health benefits of tobacco by TV personality Arthur "Buy 'Em By the Carton" Godfrey, among many others. Even the American Medical Association (AMA) accepted tobacco advertising in its journals, with such statements as, "They won't harm anybody. They will prove enjoyable." Arthur Godfrey himself later died of emphysema, a disease most commonly caused by smoking. And even though I am generally cautious when it comes to prescription medications, I succumbed to the blandishments of the pharmaceutical companies and took Vioxx for a backache ñ and even prevailed upon a naturopathic physician friend to do the same. Everyone now knows that Vioxx turned out to greatly increase the risk of heart attacks and strokes. Click on or go the the following address for my earlier newsletter on Vioxx: http://cancerdecisions.com/010905.html However, one is never too old to learn caution. Thus, while I am writing this newsletter on a laptop computer that is literally on my knee, I have placed between it and my body a thick sheet of lead from the hardware store, encased in a comfortable flannel sleeve. I have even bent the front of the shield into a wide lip, because tests with a hand-held Gaussmeter tell me that much of the electromagnetic radiation leaks from the front of the machine, although the intensity of the reading drops off dramatically within a few inches from the screen. In general, I try to reduce all unnecessary exposures to electromagnetic fields, especially while I am sleeping, by switching off the electric blanket and keeping electric appliances such as radios, clocks, etc., away from my bed. I do own and sometimes use a cell phone, but limit my exposure to its electromagnetic fields. I generally try to use it in speakerphone mode and limit the length of conversations as much as possible. And I take supplemental antioxidants with the intention of reducing free radical damage. In this, as in other matters, I think the Precautionary Principle applies. If the consequences of an action concerning the use of technology are unknown, but are possibly highly negative, then it is better to limit exposure rather than risk the uncertain, but possibly very negative, consequences. In my opinion, the ACS has insulted the thinking public and done a disservice to honest scientists who are trying to study the possible link of EMF exposure and cancer. The issue is hugely important. Cell/mobile phone use has doubled since 2000, and at present there are 1.5 billion subscribers worldwide (Garfield 2004). By attaching derogatory labels to those who are on the opposite side of the debate from themselves, the researchers at ACS will no doubt please the $112 billion cell phone industry. But this does not advance public understanding. It merely stigmatizes as irrational all those who oppose unrestricted technological change and thereby hampers a necessary scientific and public dialogue. ![]() Ahlbom A, Day N, Feychting M et al. ![]() Abstract There is now very self sustaining and well agreeing information over several countries:- To answer question 1 Is there any effect of mobile telephone base station radiation on living beings e.g. human and animal health? There are results of ill people in houses in beam patches (7 patches) so far tested (120 ill people by 2005) There is about 3 times the average rate of Cancer. in the beam patches. Ill people in flats in mast beams in Midlands (600 ill people) Ill people in a school near mast (75 ill pupils and teachers) To answer question 2 How is the incidence of ill health related to the strength of the radiation? In Spain Navarro & Oldfield 0.13 volts/metre for an Odds ratio of 39 for increased depressive tendency. In UK Beam patches about 1,5 volts/metre outside correspond to about 0.5 volts/metre inside buildings In Germany Bamberger <0.06 volts/metre give 30% illness, 0.06 -0.2 volts/metre gives 60% illness These values are relatively close compared to ICNRP 41 volts/metre! "An Unofficial View" of Health v Mobile phone Mast Non Ionizing Radiation September 2005 Introduction Newspaper cuttings were collected a few years ago, of illness near mobile telephone base station masts around this country and some from Europe. The worst case was 4 cancers in 5 adjacent houses by an old mast; this seemed to be too much of a coincidence.[Evening Standard 20 February 2002] Most of the articles were followed up by a visit, to find the extent of the illnesses at each location. A more scientific approach was needed. It was found that three pole mast beams, 120 degrees apart, often hit the ground at a distance away from the mast equal to 10 times the height of the mast and it is here, at the area of highest field intensity, that the illness patches occur. Question 1 Is there any effect of mobile telephone base station radiation on living beings e.g. human and animal health? Human Data available A HOUSES (1) 7 patches of illness were found in the highest signal level of the radiation (non ionizing) near masts around the country. Approximate simulated average fields were used,. this is of the order of 1.5 Volts/metre.outdoors and corresponds to 0.5 Volts/metre indoors 1a) The number of ill people:- 1a1) in a single beam patch is proportional to the cumulative integrated dose of radiation received over the years e.g. 8 ill after 8 years, 21 ill after 13 years and 1a2) in a two beam crossing patch, 31 ill.after 11 years. 1b) The radius away from the mast of both beam patch and illness patch agrees well. 1c) The angular phase of the illness patch relates to the angular position of the poles of the mast e.g. 120 degrees or 240 degrees (maximum error so far only 12 degrees). B) FLATS 600 people were found to be ill in flats which were at high field levels. Note: - in multistorey flats, each persons rooms are all on the same side of the building, so the inhabitants cannot escape the radiation unless they sleep in the corridor! C SCHOOLS Surveys in schools A survey in a Warwickshire school, close to a multi array mast 11 years old, showed the teachers to be twice as ill as the pupils (The teachers have more years at the school and therefore get a larger integrated cumulative dose of radiation) and the pupils to be twice as ill as the population in a West Midlands town with a merely 2 year old mast. If the data answers Question 1 in the affirmative, then the next question is: Question 2 How is the incidence of ill health related to the strength of the radiation? The latest Bamberger study from Germany shows well (at 4 levels of radiation) the relation between the ICNIRP (International Commission on Non Ionizing Radiation Protection) Guidelines, the local Salzburg Guidelines and the levels for 60% illness at 0.06 0.2 volts/metre and 94% illness at 0.21 0.6 volts/metre in the 356 people studied Note - the level in the beam patches in Question 1 is 1.5 volts per metre externally which is of the order of 0.5 volts/metre internally in houses. This agrees fairly well with the more detailed Bamberger study. This also agrees well with the Oldfield Navarro results of 0.13 volts/metre for an Odds ratio of 39 for increased depressive tendency. The remaining question is:- Question 3 What are the mechanisms by which illness are caused? If over time, radiation suppresses our nightly melatonin cycle, evolved by all vertebrae (humans and animals) etc over many millennia, then our immune system protection against cosmic rays is seriously compromised. I have not yet found an old mast that has not got an illness patch. If you have any data which disagrees with the above, if there is any, I would be glad to receive it. "An Unofficial View" of Official Views About 1997, ICNIRP (International Commission for Non Ionizing Radiation Protection) took a very narrow view of the reasons for susceptibility of the bodies of living beings to Non Ionizing Radiation. They merely considered the heating effect and ignored the most important effects. They persuaded most governments and institutions with plausible arguments to their view. They did not know then what we know now. They had no feel that on this earth "we see through glass as but darkly". It is easy to think that, although some of us can stand a few years of radiation without any obvious effects, that there is no effect. However this is really living in myth land and ignoring what is going on. 1) An Establishment statement The balance of evidence to date suggests that exposures to RF radiation below NRPB and ICNRP guidelines do not cause adverse health effects to the general population This is a non quantitative statement that has been static for several years. It is more political than scientific. It is a chameleon, depending on the population which is being considered. A) If this is applied to the general population of UK then it is apparently True. But highly diluted results are being obtained due to averaging many people outside beam patches with a few people inside beam patches. B) But if this is applied to the general population of a Beam Patch, then it is False. The illness applies to up to 50% of the people, with an illness density of about 3 times that of the surrounding area which is at a much lower radiated field level. 2) An Establishment view There are so many masts about that there is sure to be some coincidences with random cancer clusters. The data on the previous page shows that mast induced illness is very far from being random and is in fact extremely determinate. Note - if mast induced illness is random, then it is out of control of the establishment and from an economic viewpoint, then maximum wealth should be generated by the expansion of the mobile telephone industry. 3) A Consensus view. People feel they are safer if their views agree with the "general consensus" however it is possible on odd occasions that this view may be erroneous particularly when:- A) A new situation occurs - much higher frequency, digital, squarer waves, as compared to the old lower frequency sinusoidal waves of broadcasting. The establishment will pretend it is not a new situation. B) And from my work so far, I feel that ICNIRPs decision was extremely misleading, because they had not got the data then that we have now. The establishment will attempt to defend the old consensus by calling new scientific data merely anecdotal and by destructively fastening on unimportant points and neglecting important points. Defence of an old consensus can be very unfair scientifically. 4) Paralysis of advancement of knowledge by cutting funding Several scientists have said that there was no funding for key work. 1) At Universities students who wanted to do worthwhile work were dissuaded because it would be controversial (Universities depend on Government for their funding.). 2) This means that any real work must be done voluntarily by a retired scientist within the cost limits of the volunteer. 5) The Suppresion of anti policy statements has maintained the myth for several years. 6) Generalisations and logicality not rooted in actuality do not help health. John Walker Instrumentation The Acousticom makes one aware of radiation, but it does to a certain extent indicate the source. However a digital frequency analyser is much more versatile and about one tenth of the cost of the old analogue versions. Available online 15 August 2005. Abstract We recorded the resting electroencephalogram of 20 healthy subjects in order to investigate the effect of electromagnetic field (EMF) exposure on EEG waking activity and its temporal development. The subjects were randomly assigned to two groups and exposed, in double-blind conditions, to a typical mobile phone signal (902.40 MHz, modulated at 217 Hz, with an average power of 0.25 W) before or during the EEG recording session. The results show that, under real exposure as compared to baseline and sham conditions, EEG spectral power was influenced in some bins of the alpha band. This effect was greater when the EMF was on during the EEG recording session than before it. The present data lend further support to the idea that pulsed high-frequency electromagnetic fields can affect normal brain functioning, also if no conclusions can be drawn about the possible health effects. Paniagua JM, Jimenez A, Rufo M, Antolin A. Departamento de Fisica, Escuela Politecnica, Universidad de Extremadura, Caceres, Spain. paniagua@unex.es We present the results of a study of the extremely low frequency (ELF) magnetic fields in urban environments of the Extremadura region (Spain). The study included a spectral analysis, an analysis of the temporal variation, and spot measurements in the streets of four cities. The spectral analysis showed that the main source of magnetic field exposure was that corresponding to the principal power frequency (50 Hz) and its third harmonic. The magnetic flux density measured at one point over 24 h presented rapid fluctuations in short time periods. Smoothing the time series eliminated these fluctuations, showing a temporal evolution associated with the differing levels of power consumption over the course of the day. The values of the spot measurements taken in the streets were all below the ICNIRP reference level, although 30% surpassed 0.2 microT, the value that some epidemiological studies take as the threshold above which there exist risks of effects that could be harmful to health. The values found for the magnetic flux density in these urban settings were generally greater than values reported in the literature for residential areas, and similar to, although in some cases less than those in workplace environments. ![]() A new Israeli study is presented in the Israeli media as strong evidence for damage in the eyes by cellular phones, a mainstream journalist in a very mainstream newspaper writes "the findings were conclusive", the lens (of calves) exposed to the radiation lost focus. more Abstract A novel experimental system was used to investigate the localized effects of microwave radiation on bovine eye lenses in culture for over 2 weeks. Using this setup, we found clear evidence that this radiation has a significant impact on the eye lens. At the macroscopic level, it is demonstrated that exposure to a few mW at 1 GHz for over 36 h affects the optical function of the lens. Most importantly, self-recovery occurs if the exposure is interrupted. At the microscopic level, close examination of the lens indicates that the interaction mechanism is completely different from the mechanism-causing cataract via temperature increase. Contrary to the latters effect, that is particularly pronounced in the vicinity of the sutures and it is assumed to be a result of local friction between the edges of the fibers consisting the lens. Even if macroscopically the lens has recovered from the irradiation, microscopically the indicators of radiation impact remain. Bioelectromagnetics 26:398-405, 2005. © 2005 Wiley-Liss, Inc. ![]() Still about power lines. What is the meaning of the results of the new study on power lines? The meaning was explained on TV to the viewers (former Friday night), by Dr. Sigal Sadezki, who leads the Israeli Interphone study. I saw it slowly on video to write the exact words: Sadezki:"This study joins to a line of other studies, that already supported the existence of connection between power lines and risk for childhood leukemia. On the other hand, it is very important, as always, to understand that one single study, even if it's a big study, and even if it's relatively a good study, of course doesn't prove the connection, and certainly doesn't prove the causality of the connection". No wonder there is so much confusion among the public about health effects from power lines! Iris |

TenneT (the Transmission System Operator (TSO) in the Netherlands) has introduced a new high voltage system: http://tennet.nl/english/news/archive/8693.asp#0 The magnetic fields by the Wintrack powerline system are decreased, because the lines are always six in a perfect circle (before, they were in triangles). ![]() Dr Neil Cherry Associate Professor of Environmental Health, Lincoln University 9th December 2002 Abstract Dr Henry Lai and Dr Narendra Singh used a DNA Comet Assay developed by Dr Singh to determine the microwaves damaged DNA-strands. They found that nonthermal microwave exposures significantly caused single and double DNA stranded breakage in living mice brains. The cellphone company Motorola wanted to prove that these studies were wrong and that microwaves and cell phone radiation do not cause DNA strand breakage. They funded Dr Roti Roti at Washington University, St Louis to replicate the Lai and Singh studies to try to show that they do not produce these effects. Dr Roti Roti used a different, much less sensitive assessment method and used a cell-line not living mice. Hence it is not a replicate study. They claimed not to show any DNA strand breakage from radiation exposures. The analysis of their own published data shows that they actually did show that microwaves and cellphone non-thermal radiation significantly damages DNAstrands and enhances significant repair rates in human cells. more .pdf, 191 KB Please consider my research on this subject. We need absolute proof positive of the harmful effects of EM radiation on living systems. We have it. The key is that the effects of radiation are CUMULATIVE - I repeat CUMULATIVE !!! IT CAN TAKE 10 - 20 - 30 or even more years for the damage to become apparent. It can even be handed down through generations. These things we know. Between the years of aproximately 1995 and 2005 (ten years) a poultry factory existed directly across the road from a very high power, multi-frequency (probably including micro-wave) transmitter site. The site has been there since 1943 but the poultry factories just began congregating in the early 90s. The factory where it all began (the virus outbreak in 2004) is directly across the road and to the east of the transmitter site. Radiation alone will not cause a biological virus outbreak but it will weaken the living systems and prepare them for being vulnerable to biological and/or chemical attack and infection. Once ignited the virus becomes self-generating. With help we can prove this - 19 million dead chickens and all of them disposed of without investigating the cause. Is this a cover-up? I don't think so. It is just plain simple stupidity on behalf of people that pretend to be scientists. I have shared my research with many knowledgeable people as well as many concerned people that don't understand EM radiation. I presented it to a Parliamentary Investigative committee. I have shared it with Louis Slesin, Olle Johannsen, Magda Havas and Henry Lai. My point is? I see this as a long term project beginning with a system of constant monitoring of background radiation in selected areas. It may take ten years but eventually HONEST epidemiologists will make the connection. And ALWAYS we must keep in mind that the results of radiation are CUMULATIVE over time. We need measurements of total accumulated radiation over a specified period of time. Just as we did in the 60s when we wore personal dosimeters in the field locating sources of radiation. Just as Xray technicians and also people required to work in the Chernobyl (1986?) area must. We need to measure accumulated radiation. Motorola and Nokia - Siemens et al are not going to do it for us - but then - perhaps they already are? Larry |

Zu diesem Ergebnis kommen Wissenschaftler der Universität Oxford in der Studie "Childhood cancer in relation to distance from high voltage power lines in England and Wales: a case-control study". Design Case-control study. Setting Cancer registry and National Grid records. Subjects Records of 29 081 children with cancer, including 9700 with leukaemia. Children were aged 0-14 years and born in England and Wales, 1962-95. Controls were individually matched for sex, approximate date of birth, and birth registration district. No active participation was required. Main outcome measures Distance from home address at birth to the nearest high voltage overhead power line in existence at the time. Results Compared with those who lived > 600 m from a line at birth, children who lived within 200 m had a relative risk of leukaemia of 1.69 (95% confidence interval 1.13 to 2.53); those born between 200 and 600 m had a relative risk of 1.23 (1.02 to 1.49). There was a significant (P < 0.01) trend in risk in relation to the reciprocal of distance from the line. No excess risk in relation to proximity to lines was found for other childhood cancers. Conclusions There is an association between childhood leukaemia and proximity of home address at birth to high voltage power lines, and the apparent risk extends to a greater distance than would have been expected from previous studies. About 4% of children in England and Wales live within 600 m of high voltage lines at birth. If the association is causal, about 1% of childhood leukaemia in England and Wales would be attributable to these lines, though this estimate has considerable statistical uncertainty. There is no accepted biological mechanism to explain the epidemiological results; indeed, the relation may be due to chance or confounding. ex more see also ex Residential and Occupational Exposures to 50-Hz Magnetic Fields and Breast Cancer in Women see Advice to Governments from Repacholi-WHO |

![]() 23.05.05 Abstract The paper discusses several aspects of the practical application of the SAR. It is shown that the unit is an ideal solution for basic research and laboratory experiments. SAR is directly nonmeasurable unit. Although methods and devices based upon indirect SAR measurements may widen our knowledge about EM energy distribution and absorption within a body. It is shown that for practical applications the temperature SAR measurement methods are not sensitive enough while methods based upon E (H) measurement are less accurate than traditional approaches. As a result of assumption SAR = 4 W/kg as a basic restriction the present protection standards are illogical and nonrealiazable. A return to traditional units (E,H,S) in the standards and surveying metrology is suggested. Introduction Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) has been widely accepted as an indicator of the ElectroMagnetic (EM) energy absorption by a living organism and among others, due to it, it was assumed as a good baseground for many protection standards and SAR was introduced to them as the basic restriction. Two introductory remarks: - SAR is almost ideal unit showing quantity of energy absorbed from the electromagnetic field (EMF), - the magnitude of SAR is a function of parameters characterising the EMF (frequency, modulation, polarization), the exposure conditions (temperature, humidity) and individual properties of the exposed animal or person (fatness, psychophysiological status, effectiveness of the thermoregulation system). Evident conclusion: - SAR may be excellent measure of correlation between exposure and thermal effects caused by it, Anm. umtsno: (siehe auch Berechnung der spezifischen Absorptionsrate (SAR) dielektrischer Körper mit FEKO, in De, .pdf, 1,01 MB)- Info am 28.7.05 von: webmaster@elektrosmognews.de - the magnitude of the SAR, assumed as permissible, is a result of conditions in which experiments were carried out, thus: the magnitudes suggested by different authors erformed in different conditions, differ more than in one order of magnitude [1]. As a result of a compromise, in famous paper [2] as the basic restriction was accepted SAR = 4 W/kg, that is approximately equal to the geometric mean of the magnitudes given in the literature. The compromise is here evident because for a standard formulation an introductory level assumption was necessary. However, it well illustrates that the assumed SAR, and the basic restriction, is not a physical constant but a magnitude chosen in more or less arbitrary way thus: approach to it should be flexible. quotation: " It is possible to generate several simple examples, however, their final shape should be prepared by biologists and medical doctors, not by engineers or physicists; the latter represent a tendency to formal perfection, and the results of it we have as the present standards." more (.pdf, 37 KB) |

30 May 2005 From: Stanislaw Szmigielski szmigielski(przy)wihe.waw.pl To: webmaster@umtsno.de Dear Dr van Velden; In Poland we have a permissible exposure level to microwave radiation (300 MHz - 300 GHz) for general public set at 0.1 W/sq.m. (mean power density), being equivalent of 6 V/m for electric field component. In our opinion this level provides adequate protection for continous exposures, in fact the real exposure levels for majority of the population are considerably lower. Concerning the exposures from mobile phone base stations, being well below the permissible level of 0.1 W/sq.m., it is our strong feeling that, in view of the present state of art, no health risks of effects could be related to these exposures. Division of Occupational Medicine, Medical University of Vienna, Waehringer Guertel 18-20, Vienna 1090, Austria. Cultured human diploid fibroblasts and cultured rat granulosa cells were exposed to intermittent and continuous radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMF) used in mobile phones, with different specific absorption rates (SAR) and different mobile-phone modulations. DNA strand breaks were determined by means of the alkaline and neutral comet assay. RF-EMF exposure (1800MHz; SAR 1.2 or 2W/kg; different modulations; during 4, 16 and 24h; intermittent 5min on/10min off or continuous wave) induced DNA single- and double-strand breaks. Effects occurred after 16h exposure in both cell types and after different mobile-phone modulations. The intermittent exposure showed a stronger effect in the comet assay than continuous exposure. Chlorophylls were quantitatively studied in the leaves of black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia L.) seedlings exposed to electromagnetic fields of high frequency. Exposure system was designed and built up to make possible simultaneous exposure of seedling lots (3 months old) to low power density electromagnetic fields corresponding to a frequency of 400 MHz. After three weeks of daily exposures (1, 2, 3 and 8 hours), chlorophyll levels were measured using adequate spectral device. Statistical analysis of experimental results was performed by means of t-test to identify significant modifications induced by electromagnetic treatment in exposed samples in comparison to the control. Chlorophyll-a as well as chlorophyll-b level was found to decrease except the exposure time of two hours, where a considerable enhancement was noticed. It was revealed that the ratio of the two main types of chlorophyll was decreasing logarithmically to the increase of daily exposure time. exAbstract ![]() EN Studie http://omega.twoday.net/stories/691472/ Aus dem Abstract: Die Chlorophylle der Blätter von Robiniensämlingen (Robinia pseudoacacia L.) wurden nach Exposition in hochfrequenten elektromagnetischen Feldern (400 MHz) quantitativ untersucht. ![]() DE Research in Austria The radiation of a cell phone base station at a distance of 80 metres causes significant changes of the electrical currents in the brains of testees (measured by electroencefalogram, EEG). All the testees said they felt unwell during the radiation, some of them seriously. That is the result of an investigation by a team of Austrian scientists. They measured alpha 1 (8 to 10 Hz), alpha 2 (10 to 12 Hz) and beta waves (13 to 20 Hz). A small density of GSM 900 and GSM 1800 radiation already caused several significant changes in these three frequency ranges. This means the body is stressed - temporarily this may have some positive effect, in the long run however stress certainly reduces the quality of life, capacity for work and state of health. more |
