Scientific research concerning human well-being and health in the vicinity of phone masts.

This is an overview of all epidemiologic and provocative research concerning human well-being and health in the vicinity of masts for GSM and UMTS (3G) mobile communication. The object of the research are living humans. This overview does not contain in vitro or in vivo (animals) laboratory research, because they do not give a consistent picture of what happens to people who are exposed permanently to pulsed radiofrequency radiation.

Summary
A case–control study on testicular cancer included use of cellular and cordless telephones. The results were based on answers from 542 (92%) cases with seminoma, 346 (89%) with non-seminoma, and 870 (89%) controls. Regarding seminoma the use of analog cellular phones gave odds ratio (OR) 1/4 1.2, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1/4 0.9–1.6, digital phones OR 1/4 1.3, CI 1/4 0.9–1.8, and cordless phones OR 1/4 1.1, CI 1/4 0.8–1.5. The corresponding results for nonseminoma were OR 1/4 0.7, CI 1/4 0.5–1.1, OR 1/4 0.9, CI 1/4 0.6–1.4, and OR 1/4 1.0, CI 1/4 0.7–1.4, respectively.

There was no dose–response effect and OR did not increase with latency time. No association was found with place of keeping the mobile phone during standby, such as trousers pocket. Cryptorchidism was associated both with seminoma (OR 1/4 4.2, CI 1/4 2.7–6.5) and non-seminoma (OR 1/4 3.3, CI 1/4 2.0–5.6), but no interaction was found with the use of cellular or cordless telephones.

BACKGROUND: We analyzed effects of exposure to magnetic fields on the expression of acute leukemia in children with Down syndrome (who have a 20-fold higher risk of leukemia). METHODS:: We performed a case-control study that included 42 children with both acute leukemia and Down syndrome as cases and 124 healthy children with Down syndrome as controls. We obtained demographic information concerning the children and took spot measurements of magnetic fields at each residence.

RESULTS: The odds ratio for direct measurements of magnetic fields >/=6.00 mG was 3.7 (95% confidence interval = 1.05-13.1).

CONCLUSION: The association between magnetic fields and leukemia in children with Down syndrome suggests the possibility of a causal role for magnetic fields in the etiology of leukemia among a genetically susceptible subgroup of children.

SUBVERTING THE SCIENCE OF EPIDEMIOLOGY

from Iris, 17 Dec 2006

part 1
| part 2

PART I

Epidemiology is the branch of medicine that studies the causes, distribution and prevention of diseases within various populations. It is to epidemiologists that the medical profession, lawmakers and the shapers of public policy turn when they need clarification of the underlying factors that trigger or predispose to disease.

Epidemiology has been responsible for some of the most crucial and life-saving advances in public health. However, the very importance of epidemiology makes it a prime target for the industrial giants whose products or manufacturing techniques are under suspicion as possibly contributing to diseases such as cancer. If they are to escape the imposition of restrictive controls or outright bans on their products, it is in their interest to minimize the impact of any potentially damaging epidemiological evidence.

This phenomenon was discussed in a paper titled ex"Secret ties to industry and conflicting interests in cancer research," published last month in the American Journal of Industrial Medicine. The authors of the paper documented several instances of leading epidemiologists secretly acting as paid consultants to industry over extended periods during which those industries were under intense scrutiny as potential contributors to the incidence of cancer.

For example, the paper cites the case of Sir Richard Doll, one of the most famous epidemiologists and cancer researchers in the world, who died last year. One could hardly imagine a more eminent career. In 1950, Doll was one of the first to point out the clear link between cigarette smoking and the alarming rise in lung cancer. "The risk of developing the disease increases in proportion to the amount smoked," he wrote.

"It may be 50 times as great among those who smoke 25 or more cigarettes a day as among non-smokers." This was a revolutionary thesis at the time. But, like his US colleague and contemporary, Ernst Wynder, Doll not only directed his efforts toward making the medical profession aware of the lethal effects of smoking, he also made use of the media to explain the connection to the public. Through his groundbreaking work on tobacco and lung cancer Doll became a foundational figure in modern epidemiology and public health.

Before and after World War II, Doll was an influential member of the Socialist Medical Society, and made a name for himself as someone who was not afraid to indict industry for its contribution to the growing incidence of cancer. In 1954 he warned that, besides smoking, exposure to nickel, asbestos, gas production tars, and radioactivity were other major causes of cancer.

In the following year, he published a landmark report warning about high cancer rates in asbestos workers. In 1967, he further warned that an "immense" number of substances were known to cause cancer, and that prevention was a better strategy than cure. Until the late sixties, he was still considered a political radical. However, as the years passed, Doll mysteriously and sometimes drastically changed these views.

According to Samuel S. Epstein, MD, Professor Emeritus of Environmental and Occupational Medicine at the School of Public Health, University of Illinois, Chicago, the one-time maverick eventually emerged as a major defender of corporate industry interests. Using the immense prestige of his position, Doll was able to trivialize and dismiss numerous industrial causes of cancer, while focusing public and political attention on smoking as the prime offender.

Doll also published several influential papers that called into question other possible environmental causes of cancer. One of these was "The causes of cancer: quantitative estimates of avoidable risks of cancer in the United States today," published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute in 1981, which he co-authored with his close colleague, Professor Richard Peto. Another paper, "Effects of exposure to vinyl chloride: an assessment of the evidence," was written by Doll alone. These and other publications massively downplayed the risks of environmental carcinogens in the food, air, water and workplace.

Doll's star continued to rise throughout his long life. Although he never received a Nobel Prize, he was inducted into the Royal Society in 1966, was appointed Regius Professor of Medicine at Oxford University in 1969, and received a knighthood in 1971. Oxford named a building after him while he was still living. When he died in July 2005, at the age of 92, he was lauded as a founder of British cancer science.

But Doll's reputation has now begun to fray, if not unravel entirely. The publication of the paper "Secret ties to industry and conflicting interests in cancer research" in the American Journal Industrial Medicine reveals that there was a hidden side to Doll's public career. Over a period of many years, Doll was secretly retained as a paid consultant by several giant international chemical companies at the same time that he was acting as an ostensibly impartial scientific expert to investigate and report on suspected links between these companies' products and the development of cancer. For example, the industrial giant Monsanto paid Doll $1,500 per day as a consultant over a period of years during the 1980s.

At that time, Monsanto was at the center of an intense debate concerning the carcinogenicity of its product, Agent Orange, the notorious defoliant that was widely used during the Vietnam war. Doll testified to an Australian Royal Commission investigating the claims of servicemen who were exposed to Agent Orange that there was no evidence to suggest that this product was carcinogenic. Yet in his publications and statements he consistently failed to disclose that he was a paid consultant for Monsanto.

With the full weight of Doll's iconic reputation behind the denial of any connection between Agent Orange and cancer, the Royal Commission concluded that the defoliant did not in fact represent a health hazard. Monsanto was thus able to escape responsibility for causing untold numbers of cancers both among servicemen and the indigenous Vietnamese population. Without Doll's help, it is doubtful if this egregious cover-up could have taken place.

Similarly, Doll was hired as a paid consultant throughout the 1990s by other major industrial companies including Dow Chemical, and Turner and Newall, manufacturers of the carcinogen asbestos. During this period he similarly gave testimony and depositions as an expert witness on behalf of chemical industry giants in a number of cases, including one brought by the families of deceased workers who claimed that their loved ones' brain cancers had been triggered by exposure to vinyl chloride.

Once again, Doll failed to disclose his paid consultancy status, and neglected to declare any conflict of interest, while testifying to the effect that there was no evidence whatever that vinyl chloride contributed to brain cancer. Again, his towering reputation won the day, even though a decade earlier, in 1979, vinyl chloride had already been recognized and classified as a Grade I human carcinogen.

The secret of Doll's financial entanglement with industry was finally brought to light by lawyers who cross-examined him on the evidence he had given on behalf of Dow and others, and drew attention to his failure to disclose these connections. In response to lawyers' questions about his lack of acknowledgement of financial interest, Doll disingenuously replied that he did not know that he should disclose these sources of income.

According to his present-day defenders, the money in question was passed along to Green College, a medical college that Doll helped found at Oxford. But this is a weak defense, since accepting honoraria of this size certainly makes one beholden to the giver, regardless of how altruistically such money is spent. Another argument raised in Doll's defense was that he did this consulting work before formal disclosure of commercial interests had become mandatory.

But the principle that one should disclose one's financial and other biases was certainly widely accepted in the world of science long before it became a formal requirement of publishing in peer-reviewed scientific journals. According to his friend and close associate Richard Peto, Doll felt that it was necessary to co-operate with companies in order to gain access to data that could prove their products to be dangerous.

Yet this explanation of Doll's behavior flies in the face of the evidence. True, Doll started out as a critic of industry, a position that took him to the pinnacles of the medical establishment. Once there, however, he became increasingly cozy with those he had formerly criticized and wound up as their defender.

Far from speaking out on the hazards of industrial pollution, as Prof. Peto claims, Doll's persuasive words and unassailable professional reputation were used to downplay the dangers of chemical companies' products and manufacturing processes. To be concluded, with references, next week.

Moss Report, Subverting the science of epidemiology, part II

In a paper titled "Secret ties to industry and conflicting interests in cancer research," published last month in the American Journal of Industrial Medicine, several examples of leading epidemiologists secretly acting as paid consultants to industry are described. Last week we discussed the case of Sir Richard Doll, the eminent British epidemiologist who, along with his US colleague and contemporary Ernst Wynder, is credited with having initially established the link between smoking and lung cancer.

The paper documents the fact that for decades Doll was secretly retained as a paid consultant by several giant international chemical companies at the same time that he was acting as an ostensibly impartial scientific expert to investigate and report on suspected links between these companies' products and the development of cancer.

The paper's leading author is Professor Lennart Hardell, MD, PhD, of the Department of Oncology, University Hospital, Ãñrebro, Sweden. Professor Hardell has published widely on issues of carcinogenesis and occupational and environmental medicine. This year alone, he has authored or co-authored thirteen papers that have been published in prominent international medical journals.

As Hardell and colleagues point out, Doll's case was not an isolated incident. The paper documents other equally egregious examples of conflict of interest, including the case of Dr. Ragnar Rylander, a professor of environmental health at Göteborg (Gothenburg) University in Sweden, who for 30 years acted as a paid consultant to Philip Morris, the American tobacco giant.

During this time he acted in effect as a kind of double agent, secretly discussing his academic tobacco-related research with Philip Morris executives and lawyers. Despite the fact that Swedish law requires all public servants, including academic researchers, to report all such paid commissions, Rylander consistently failed to disclose his consultant status to the university and government authorities by whom he was employed. Further, when this unholy alliance finally came to light in Sweden in 2002, Rylander categorically denied the association, publicly stating "I have never been a consultant for Philip Morris," according to the Hardell article.

Further examples of conflict of interest cited by the paper include the case of Professor Hans-Olov Adami of the prestigious Karolinska Institute, who, along with Dimitrios Trichopoulos, Professor Emeritus at Harvard, attended the Dioxin 2001 conference in Korea, and there delivered a presentation that downplayed the toxicity of dioxins and described them as non-carcinogenic. But both Profs. Adami and Trichopoulos were at that time being paid by the US consultancy firm Exponent, Inc., which was actively engaged in an attempt to soften dioxin's image on behalf of industry clients that included Dow Chemical.

The growing interdependence of industry and academia inevitably carries with it an inherent risk of conflict of interest. But, as the authors of the paper point out, the secrecy surrounding paid consultancy amplifies the corrupting influence immeasurably. "Conflict of interest in itself is widespread, but its potential for generating misinformation is greatly increased when it is undeclared," the authors state.

Epidemiology holds the key to controlling the environmental triggers of cancer. The chemical and tobacco industries evidently realized this long ago, and took steps to subvert the science that had the potential to dent their profits severely, if not put them out of business entirely. Ultimately, it is the health of the public that suffers most because of the selfishness and dishonesty of a few greedy researchers and their corporate seducers.

Industry paid top cancer expert

After Doll's death- the truth is out, but the lies never stop

Date: Fri, 8 Dec 2006, from: Iris Atzmon

The paper by Hardell, Richter et al makes headlines: Industry 'paid top cancer expert'

The scientist who first linked smoking to lung cancer was paid by a biotech firm while investigating cancer risks in the industry, it has emerged. The Guardian newspaper reported that Professor Sir Richard Doll held a consultancy post with US firm Monsanto for more than 20 years.

During that time he investigated the potential cancer causing properties of Agent Orange, made by the company. But a former colleague said he gave the money he was paid to charity. Professor Sir Richard Peto, a fellow expert in cancer, said: "Everybody working in this area knew that Richard worked for industry and consulted for industry, and would do court cases.

"It does not in any sense suggest that his work was biased. He was incredibly careful to avoid bias."

The Guardian reported that Sir Richard, who died in 2005 aged 92, received a US$1,500-a-day consultancy fee from Monsanto, then a chemicals company, in the mid-1980s. During that period, Sir Richard wrote to an Australian commission on the results of his investigation into whether the chemical Agent Orange, famous for its use by the US during the Vietnam War, caused cancer.

He argued in his letter that there was no evidence that Agent Orange caused cancer. Should come clean Professor Lennart Hardell, of the Oncology Department at University Hospital Orebro, Sweden, has also studied the potential hazards posed by Agent Orange.

He was one of the scientists whose work was dismissed by Sir Richard. He told the BBC Sir Richard's work was tainted. He said: "It's quite OK to have contacts with industry, but you should be fair and say 'well, I'm writing this letter as a consultant for Monsanto." "But he does it as president, Green College, UK - a prestige position; also the Imperial Research Cancer Organisation in the UK.

"And that makes a different position of the paper because you are an official university-employed person giving this position." Further documents obtained by The Guardian allegedly show that Sir Richard was also paid a - £15,000 fee by the Chemical Manufacturers Association, and chemicals companies Dow Chemicals and ICI for a review of vinyl chloride, used in plastics, which largely cleared the chemical of any link with cancers apart from liver cancer. According to the newspaper, this is a view with which the World Health Organisation disagrees.

Doll's views on the chemical were used by the manufacturers' trade association to defend it for more than a decade, The Guardian said. Sir Richard was the first to publish a peer-reviewed study, in 1951, to demonstrate smoking was a major cause of lung cancer.

Epidemiologists with secret ties to industry

The December 2 issue of the British Medical Journal carries a news article entitled "Professor Doll failed to declare interests when working on vinyl chloride". The first 150 words of the text are freely available at

http://bmj.com/cgi/content/short/333/7579/1142-c?etoc.

This news item is based on an article in the American Journal of Industrial Medicine, "Secret Ties to Industry and Conflicting Interests in Cancer Research", written by Lennart Hardell, Martin J. Walker, Bo Walhjalt, Lee S. Friedman, and Elihu D. Richter.

The abstract:

Background Recently it was reported that a Swedish professor in environmental health has for decades worked as a consultant for Philip Morris without reporting his employment to his academic employer or declaring conflicts of interest in his research. The potential for distorting the epidemiological assessments of hazard and risk through paid consultants, pretending to be independent, is not exclusive to the tobacco industry.

Methods Documentation

is drawn from peer reviewed publications, websites, documents from the Environmental Protection Agency, University reports, Wellcome Library Special Collections and the Washington Post. Results Some consulting firms employ university researchers for industry work thereby disguising industry links in the income of large departments. If the industry affiliation is concealed by the scientist, biases from conflicting interests in risk assessments cannot be evaluated and dealt with properly.

Furthermore, there is reason to suspect

that editors and journal staff may suppress publication of scientific results that are adverse to industry owing to internal conflict of interest between editorial integrity and business needs. Conclusions Examples of these problems from Sweden, UK, and USA are presented.

The shortfalls cited

in this article illustrate the need for improved transparency, regulations that will help curb abuses as well as instruments for control and enforcement against abuses. end quote. The Swedish professor mentioned in the abstract is Ragnar Rylander, whose case has been quite thoroughly investigated in Sweden and Geneva and is widely publicized on the Web in the main European languages.

The universities of Gothenburg and Geneva have been somewhat defensive during this process. As we know, cases of unethical behaviour in academia would often go unnoticed if it were not for the efforts of investigative journalists.

The next example

in this article is professor Hans-Olov Adami, Swedish cancer epidemiologist who was recently given a top job at Harvard

http://ki.se/ki/jsp/polopoly.jsp?d=130&a=17248&l=en&newsdep=130,

http://news.harvard.edu/gazette/2006/10.05/04-adami.html.

Chemical carcinogenesis is a perpetual problem, and it has often been taken for granted that epidemiologists have a key to its solution. The title of a 1995 article by science journalist Gary Taubes is "Epidemiology Faces Its Limits"

http://mcgill.ca/files/cancerepi/Science269-164s.pdf

This text is a neat summary of the situation in which the specialty had landed more than a decade ago. Looking for causal explanations by numerical methods has its limitations. However, epidemiologists are still much in demand when help is needed to stave off threats of government regulation.

Sir Richard Doll passed away in July, 2005. Obituarists remembered him as an impeccable and indeed exemplary scientist who saved millions of lives. Martin Walker has already aptly described this hagiographic tradition in his 2005 article, "Sir Richard Doll: Death, dioxin and PVC",

http://dipmat.unipg.it/~mamone/sci-dem/contri/walker.PDF.

Sir Richard's involvement in the so-called Spanish cooking oil scandal was touched upon briefly by Martin Walker in the article just mentioned, to which I might add the following links:

"This study shows that a higher degree of hearing loss is associated with long-term exposure to electromagnetic (EM) field generated by cellular phones"

Effects of intensive and moderate cellular phone use on hearing function.

Oktay MF, Dasdag S.

Department of Otolaryngology, Medical School of Dicle University, Diyarbakir, Turkey.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of radiation emitted by mobile phones on the hearing of users. The study was carried out on three groups:

1) 20 men who have used a cellular phone frequently and spoken approximately 2 h per day for four years;
2) 20 men who have used a cellular phone for 10-20 min per day for four years; and
3) 20 healthy men who have never used a cellular phone (the control group).

Brainstem evoked response audiometric (BERA) and pure tone audiometric (PTA) methods were used to measure the effects of exposure on hearing function of the subjects. In BERA measurements, I-III, III-V, and I-V interpeak latencies were evaluated. Interpeak latency of subjects in two experimental groups was compared to that of subjects in the control group.

The BERA results showed no differences among the groups (p > 0.05). In PTA measurements, detection thresholds at 250 Hz, 500 Hz, 1000 Hz, 2000 Hz, 4000 Hz, and 8000 Hz frequencies were measured in all three groups. No differences were observed between moderate mobile phone users (10-20 min. per day) and control subjects. However, detection thresholds in those who talked approximately 2 h per day were found to be higher than those in either moderate users or control subjects. Differences at 4000 Hz for both bone and air conduction for right ears, and 500 Hz, and 4000 Hz bone and air conduction for left ears were significant for mean hearing threshold.

This study shows that a higher degree of hearing loss is associated with long-term exposure to electromagnetic (EM) field generated by cellular phones.

Note - it is written in the study that the funding came from the Danish Cancer Society (and the danish strategies research council) but the original study from 2001 was funded THROUGH the Danish cancer society and BY the 2 biggest cellular companies in Denmark, Teledenmark and Sonophone. (it cost them 1 millions koronas).

It was reported at the time by Sianette Kwee. So it is the same case here- but it is not reported.

Unethical.

Subject: The Danish study

Only the media outside Denmark was informed about this study in the first place by???? industry. In Denmark it was not made public before Wednesday 12/6/2006.

Since it is based on the old study, it does not include information about cell phone use in industry, trades and crafts, governmental and other public institutions etc. In the television interview with J. Olsen it was said that now all craft-/tradesmen, who are so dependant in their work on the their cellphone can use it safely and unlimited.

After 21 years, scientists say: mobiles don't cause cancer

More than a decade's use of mobile phones does not increase the risk of brain cancer, according to one of the largest studies into the link. The longest-running investigation yet conducted involving almost half a million people has found that there is no link between mobile phone use and cancers of the head or neck. Research by the Danish Institute of Cancer Epidemiology in Copenhagen found that of the 420,095 people studied, 14,249 cancers were diagnosed, but there was no suggestion that any were linked to mobile phone use. The research contrasts with a 2004 Swedish study which found that using mobile phones for ten years or more can increase the risk of non-invasive growths called acoustic neuromas.

Study finds no cancer risk from cellphones

Dec. 5, 2006

Lauran Neergaard

AP, Washington - A huge study from Denmark offers the latest reassurance that cellphones don't trigger cancer.

Scientists tracked 420,000 Danish cellphone users, including 52,000 who had gabbed on the gadgets for 10 years or more, and some who started using them 21 years ago.

They matched phone records to the famed Danish Cancer Registry that records every citizen who gets the disease - and reported Tuesday that cellphone callers are no more likely than anyone else to suffer a range of cancer types.

The study, published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, is the largest yet to find no bad news about the safety of cell phones and the radiofrequency energy they emit.

But even the lead researcher doubts it will end the debate.

"There's really no biological basis for you to be concerned about radio waves," said John Boice, a Vanderbilt University professor and scientific director of the International Epidemiology Institute in Rockville, Md. "Nonetheless, people are."

So Boice and colleagues at Copenhagen's Danish Cancer Society plan to continue tracking the Danish callers until at least some have used the phones for 30 years.

This so-called Danish cohort "is probably the strongest study out there because of the outstanding registries they keep," said Joshua Muscat of Pennsylvania State University, who also has studied cell phones and cancer.

"As the body of evidence accumulates, people can become more reassured that these devices are safe, but the final word is not there yet," Muscat added.

Cellphones beam radiofrequency energy that can penetrate the brain's outer edge, raising questions about cancers of the head and neck, brain tumours or leukemia. Most research has found no risk, but a few studies have raised questions. And while U.S. health officials insist the evidence shows no real reason for concern, they don't give the phones a definitive clean bill of health, either, pending long-term data on slow-growing cancers.

For the latest study, personal identification numbers assigned to each Dane at birth allowed researchers to match people who began using cell phones between 1982 and 1995 with cancer records.

Among 420,000 callers tracked through 2002, there were 14,249 cancers diagnosed - fewer than the 15,001 predicted from national cancer rates. Nor did the study find increased risks for any specific tumour type.

Cell phones don't raise cancer risk - study

Tue Dec 5, 2006

A total of 14,249 cancer cases were seen among the cellular telephone users, a number that was lower than would be expected for that population, according to the study appearing in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

Clean Bill of Health

"We were not able to identify any increased risks of any cancers that could be related to the use of the cellular phones," John Boice, a cancer epidemiologist at Vanderbilt University who worked on the research, said in an interview. Boice said the type of radiation involved in cell phones is not known to damage cells or DNA. "So there's no biological mechanism that would suggest that even this type of exposure could cause cancer or DNA damage," Boice said. The study reinforces the consensus among leading health organizations that cellular phones do not cause harmful health effects, a wireless industry group said.

"The overwhelming majority of studies that have been published in scientific journals around the globe show that wireless phones do not pose a health risk," said Joseph Farren, spokesman for CTIA, the Washington-based wireless industry group. The researchers acknowledged some limitations in their work. Schuz said they could not differentiate between people who used the phones frequently and those who did so sparingly, meaning the researchers could not rule out the possibility that some type of increased risk exists among heavy users.

"There is, in fact, a hazard from the use of a cellular phone that we have to all be concerned about," added Boice, but it is not cancer-related. "And that's using a phone when we're driving an automobile," leaving a driver distracted and causing accidents.
The study was funded by the Danish Cancer Society and Danish Strategic Research Council.

Things that kill cells

4.12.2006

Thu, 30 Nov 2006, Iris Atzmon, Mutat Res. 2006 Oct 10; [Epub ahead of print]
Links Cell death induced by GSM 900-MHz and DCS 1800-MHz mobile telephony radiation.Panagopoulos DJ, Chavdoula ED, Nezis IP, Margaritis LH. Department of Cell Biology and Biophysics, Faculty of Biology, University of Athens, Panepistimiopolis, 15784 Athens, Greece.

In the present study, the TUNEL (Terminal deoxynucleotide transferase dUTP Nick End Labeling) assay - a well known technique widely used for detecting fragmented DNA in various types of cells - was used to detect cell death (DNA fragmentation) in a biological model, the early and mid stages of oogenesis of the insect Drosophila melanogaster.

The flies were exposed in vivo to either GSM 900-MHz (Global System for Mobile telecommunications) or DCS 1800-MHz (Digital Cellular System) radiation from a common digital mobile phone, for few minutes per day during the first 6 days of their adult life.

The exposure conditions were similar to those to which a mobile phone user is exposed, and were determined according to previous studies of ours [D.J. Panagopoulos, A. Karabarbounis, L.H. Margaritis, Effect of GSM 900-MHz mobile phone radiation on the reproductive capacity of D. melanogaster, Electromagn. Biol. Med. 23 (1) (2004) 29-43; D.J. Panagopoulos, N. Messini, A. Karabarbounis, A.L. Philippetis, L.H. Margaritis, Radio frequency electromagnetic radiation within "safety levels" alters the physiological function of insects, in: P. Kostarakis, P. Stavroulakis (Eds.), Proceedings of the Millennium International Workshop on Biological Effects of Electromagnetic Fields, Heraklion, Crete, Greece, October 17-20, 2000, pp. 169-175, ISBN: 960-86733-0-5; D.J. Panagopoulos, L.H. Margaritis, Effects of electromagnetic fields on the reproductive capacity of D. melanogaster, in: P. Stavroulakis (Ed.), Biological Effects of Electromagnetic Fields, Springer, 2003, pp. 545-578], which had shown a large decrease in the oviposition of the same insect caused by GSM radiation.

Our present results suggest that the decrease in oviposition previously reported, is due to degeneration of large numbers of egg chambers after DNA fragmentation of their constituent cells, induced by both types of mobile telephony radiation. Induced cell death is recorded for the first time, in all types of cells constituting an egg chamber (follicle cells, nurse cells and the oocyte) and in all stages of the early and mid- oogenesis, from germarium to stage 10, during which programmed cell death does not physiologically occur.

Germarium and stages 7-8 were found to be the most sensitive developmental stages also in response to electromagnetic stress induced by the GSM and DCS fields and, moreover, germarium was found to be even more sensitive than stages 7- 8. I received it like that, without a link: Chemo drugs 'destroy brain cells' [source BBC News 30th Nov 2006]

A team from New York's University of Rochester found several types of key brain cell were highly vulnerable to the drugs. They say it might help explain side effects such as seizures and memory loss associated with chemotherapy - collectively dubbed 'chemo brain'.

The research, on mice, is published in the Journal of Biology. Drug therapy for cancer can prompt a wide range of neurological side effects, even the onset of dementia. But they were thought not to be directly linked to the drug treatment itself. Instead, some doctors have put them down to the patient's vulnerable psychological state. The latest study found that dose levels typically used when treating patients killed 40% to 80% of cancer cells - but 70% to 100% of brain cells. Several types of healthy brain cell continued to die for at least six weeks after exposure.

Common drugs tested Lead researcher Dr Mark Noble said: "This is the first study that puts chemo brain on a sound scientific footing, in terms of neurobiology and cellular biology." The Rochester team carried out tests with three drugs used to treat a wide range of cancers: carmustine, cisplatin and cytosine arabinoside. All three drugs were toxic to several types of brain cell whose job is to repair other cells in the brain - even at very low concentrations.

They also killed off oligodenrocyte cells, which play a key role in the transmission of messages around the nervous system. The researchers suggest damage to cells in the hippocampus, which is responsible for memory and learning, is most likely to explain chemo brain symptoms. Professor John Toy, Cancer Research UK's medical director, said: "The doses of therapy needed to treat cancer while leaving the body's healthy cells as unharmed as possible is a fine balance judged by experienced specialists.

"They aim to maximise benefits and minimise damage. Unfortunately side-effects can include toxicity to the brain. "This research in mice may hopefully suggest new ways of researching how this toxicity might be overcome. "It is important to remember, however, that all presently available cancer treatments have gone through extensive clinical trials to ensure that their benefits outweigh unwanted effects.

"No patient should stop their treatment because of this research." The researchers said it might be possible to add protective agents to chemotherapy drugs. They also suggest further work to pinpoint which cells are most at risk.

Abstract

Background: The use of cellular and cordless telephones has increased dramatically during the
last decade. There is concern of health problems such as malignant diseases due to microwave
exposure during the use of these devices. The brain is the main target organ.

Methods: Since the second part of the 1990's we have performed six case-control studies on this topic encompassing use of both cellular and cordless phones as well as other exposures. Three of the studies concerned brain tumours, one salivary gland tumours, one non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) and one testicular cancer. Exposure was assessed by self-administered questionnaires.

Results: Regarding acoustic neuroma analogue cellular phones yielded odds ratio (OR) = 2.9, 95
% confidence interval (CI) = 2.0–4.3, digital cellular phones OR = 1.5, 95 % CI = 1.1–2.1 and
cordless phones OR = 1.5, 95 % CI = 1.04–2.0.

The corresponding results were for astrocytoma grade III-IV OR = 1.7, 95 % CI = 1.3–2.3; OR = 1.5, 95 % CI = 1.2–1.9 and OR = 1.5, 95 % CI = 1.1–1.9, respectively.
The ORs increased with latency period with highest estimates using > 10 years time period from first use of these phone types. Lower ORs were calculated for astrocytoma grade I-II.
No association was found with salivary gland tumours, NHL or testicular cancer although an association with NHL of T-cell type could not be ruled out.

Conclusion: We found for all studied phone types an increased risk for brain tumours, mainly acoustic neuroma and malignant brain tumours. OR increased with latency period, especially for astrocytoma grade III-IV. No consistent pattern of an increased risk was found for salivary gland tumours, NHL, or testicular cancer.

Funkturm-Umgebungsstudie aus Ägypten

22.11.2006

Aim: To identify the possible neurobehavioral deficits among inhabitants living nearby mobile phone base stations.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on (85) inhabitants living nearby the first mobile phone station antenna in Menoufiya governorate, Egypt, 37 are living in a building under the station antenna while 48 opposite the station. A control group (80) participants were matched with the exposed for age, sex, occupation and educational level. All participants completed a structured questionnaire containing: personal, educational and medical histories; general and neurological examinations; neurobehavioral test battery (NBTB) [involving tests for visuomotor speed, problem solving, attention and memory]; in addition to Eysenck personality questionnaire (EPQ).

Results: The prevalence of neuropsychiatric complaints as headache (23.5%), memory changes (28.2%), dizziness (18.8%), tremors (9.4%), depressive symptoms (21.7%), and sleep disturbance (23.5%) were significantly higher among exposed inhabitants than controls: (10%), (5%), (5%), (0%), (8.8%) and (10%), respectively (P < 0.05). The NBTB indicated that the exposed inhabitants exhibited a significantly lower performance than controls in one of the tests of attention and short-term auditory memory [Paced Auditory Serial Addition Test (PASAT)]. Also, the inhabitants opposite the station exhibited a lower performance in the problem solving test (block design) than those under the station. All inhabitants exhibited a better performance in the two tests of visuomotor speed (Digit symbol and Trailmaking B) and one test of attention (Trailmaking A) than controls. The last available measures of RFR emitted from the first mobile phone base station antennas in Menoufiya governorate were less than the allowable standard level.

Conclusions and recommendations: Inhabitants living nearby mobile phone base stations are at risk for developing neuropsychiatric problems and some changes in the performance of neurobehavioral functions either by facilitation or inhibition.

So, revision of standard guidelines for public exposure to RER from mobile phone base station antennas and using of NBTB for regular assessment and early detection of biological effects among inhabitants around the stations are recommended.

Microwaves (MW) from cellular phones may affect biological systems by increasing free radicals, which may enhance lipid peroxidation levels of the brain, thus leading to oxidative damage. Melatonin is synthesized in and secreted by the pineal gland at night and exhibits anti-oxidant properties. Several studies suggest that supplementation with anti-oxidant can influence MW-induced brain damage.

The present study was designed to determine the effects of MW on the brain lipid peroxidation system, and the possible protective effects of melatonin on brain degeneration induced by MW. Twenty-eight Sprague-Dawley male rats were randomly divided into three groups as follows: (1) sham-operated control group (N = 8); (2) study 900-MHz MW-exposed group (N = 8); and (3) 900-MHz MW-exposed+melatonin (100 microg/kg sc before daily MW exposure treated group) (N = 10). Cortex brain and hippocampus tissues were removed to study the levels of lipid peroxidation as malonyl dialdehyde. The levels of lipid peroxidation in the brain cortex and hippocampus increased in the MW group compared with the control group, although the levels in the hippocampus were decreased by MW+melatonin administration. The brain cortex lipid peroxidation levels were unaffected by melatonin treatment.

We conclude that melatonin may prevent MW-induced oxidative changes in the hippocampus by strengthening the anti-oxidant defense system, by reducing oxidative stress products.

PURPOSE: To assess the effects of electromagnetic fields (EMF) emitted by mobile phones (MP) on the 1 - 20 Hz event-related brain oscillatory EEG (electroencephalogram) responses in children performing an auditory memory task (encoding and recognition).

MATERIALS AND METHODS: EEG data were gathered while 15 subjects (age 10 - 14 years) performed an auditory memory task both with and without exposure to a digital 902 MHz MP in counterbalanced order.

RESULTS: During memory encoding, the active MP modulated the event-related desynchronization/synchronization (ERD/ERS) responses in the approximately 4 - 8 Hz EEG frequencies. During recognition, the active MP transformed these brain oscillatory responses in the approximately 4 - 8 Hz and approximately 15 Hz frequencies.

CONCLUSIONS: The current findings suggest that EMF emitted by mobile phones has effects on brain oscillatory responses during cognitive processing in children.

The data on biologic effects of nonthermal microwaves (MWs) from mobile telephones are diverse, and these effects are presently ignored by safety standards of the International Commission for Non- Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP). In the present study, we investigated effects of MWs of Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM) at different carrier frequencies on human lymphocytes from healthy persons and from persons reporting hypersensitivity to electromagnetic fields (EMFs). We measured the changes in chromatin conformation, which are indicative of stress response and genotoxic effects, by the method of anomalous viscosity time dependence, and we analyzed tumor suppressor p53-binding protein 1 (53BP1) and phosphorylated histone H2AX (gamma-H2AX), which have been shown to colocalize in distinct foci with DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs), using immunofluorescence confocal laser microscopy. We found that MWs from GSM mobile telephones affect chromatin conformation and 53BP1/gamma-H2AX foci similar to heat shock.

Rubins et al provocation study- further comments

April 21, 2006
From: "Clas Tegenfeldt" tegen von bemi.se

A dual band GMSM telephone can have an transmitter power of 0,002 W up to 2 Watts. The SAR of some GSM telephones reach 2 W/kg, if we assume this happens when the phone transmitts 2 W then we would have 0,002 W/kg when the phone transmitts at its lowest level. Thus the sham exposure in the report is about the same as when someone is talking in a GSM telephone near a basestation (thus the lowest transmitted power).

This happens for indoor GSM systems as well as macro cells (if you are some hundred meters from the basestation). The difference reported in the study is 1,4 W/kg and 0,002 W/kg for exposure and sham respectively, that is less than a factor of thousand I used above. It is therefore HIGHLY questionable that the SHAM exposure can be regarded as such! If there would be a clear cut threshold for symptoms provoked by the exposure that happened to be between the 0,002 and 2 W/kg exposures then - maybe - the study would have given some information.

In a recently
published review (Kundi et al. 2004) on mobile phone use and cancer, we concluded that

Epidemiological studies that approached reasonable latencies [time period between first exposure and diagnosis] consistently observed elevated risk for the development of neoplastic diseases.

This assessment is distinctly different from the main message of the review from the International Commission for Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP; Ahlbom et al. 2004). The authors stated that

Results of these studies to date give no consistent or convincing evidence of a causal relation between RF [radiofrequency field] exposure and any adverse health effect.

Rubin et al. define electromagnetic sensitivity as a condition in which symptoms are reported AFTER perceived exposure. This is not the definition of electromagnetic (hyper)sensitivity (EHS). EHS is a condition in which symptoms are reported as related to and attributed to exposure to electromagnetic fields (WHO factsheet 296, to be found exhere.)

The afflicted persons perceive symptoms and not exposure. The latter is impossible, since EHS and non-EHS individuals cannot detect exposure.

It was compiled by the Chernobyl Forum, which involves more than 100 scientists, eight UN agencies and the governments of Russia, Belarus and Ukraine".

According to the study, the number who will die from long-term cancers caused by radiation will be 3490.

The deaths will be among almost 600,000 most contaminated by the accident
50 workers died from acute radiation poisoning or linked causes.
9 of 4000 children who have contracted thyroid cancer since the disaster have also died. The precise number of death is "unlikely ever to be known".
The study suggests that alongside radiation, mental illness has been the biggest public health problem caused by the accident.

Please consider my research on this subject.

We need absolute proof positive of the harmful effects of EM radiation on living systems.
We have it. The key is that the effects of radiation are CUMULATIVE - I repeat CUMULATIVE !!! IT CAN TAKE 10 - 20 - 30 or even more years for the damage to become apparent. It can even be handed down through generations.

These things we know.

Das Verhältnis zwischen Leukämie-Risiko bei Kindern und Hochspannungsleitungen

EN

Zu diesem Ergebnis kommen Wissenschaftler der Universität Oxford in der Studie "Childhood cancer in relation to distance from high voltage power lines in England and Wales: a case-control study".

Association between childhood leukaemia and high voltage power lines

DE

Conclusions There is an association between childhood leukaemia and proximity of home address at birth to high voltage power lines, and the apparent risk extends to a greater distance than would have been expected from previous studies. About 4% of children in England and Wales live within 600 m of high voltage lines at birth. If the association is causal, about 1% of childhood leukaemia in England and Wales would be attributable to these lines, though this estimate has considerable statistical uncertainty. There is no accepted biological mechanism to explain the epidemiological results; indeed, the relation may be due to chance or confounding.

Non-thermal DNA breakage by mobile-phone radiation (1800MHz) in human fibroblasts and in transformed GFSH-R17 rat granulosa cells in vitro.

Division of Occupational Medicine, Medical University of Vienna, Waehringer Guertel 18-20, Vienna 1090, Austria.

Cultured human diploid fibroblasts and cultured rat granulosa cells were exposed to intermittent and continuous radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMF) used in mobile phones, with different specific absorption rates (SAR) and different mobile-phone modulations. DNA strand breaks were determined by means of the alkaline and neutral comet assay. RF-EMF exposure (1800MHz; SAR 1.2 or 2W/kg; different modulations; during 4, 16 and 24h; intermittent 5min on/10min off or continuous wave) induced DNA single- and double-strand breaks. Effects occurred after 16h exposure in both cell types and after different mobile-phone modulations. The intermittent exposure showed a stronger effect in the comet assay than continuous exposure. Therefore we conclude that the induced DNA damage cannot be based on thermal effects.

Nicht-thermische DNA-Brüche durch Mobilfunkstrahlung (1800 MHz) in
menschlichen Fibroblasten und in veränderten GFSH-R17 Granulosazellen
von Ratten in vitro

Studie

Cell phone base stations change brain currents and cause unwellness
DE
Research in Austria

The radiation of a cell phone base station at a distance of 80 metres causes significant changes of the electrical currents in the brains of testees (measured by electroencefalogram, EEG). All the testees said they felt unwell during the radiation, some of them seriously.

That is the result of an investigation by a team of Austrian scientists. They measured alpha 1 (8 to 10 Hz), alpha 2 (10 to 12 Hz) and beta waves (13 to 20 Hz). A small density of GSM 900 and GSM 1800 radiation already caused several significant changes in these three frequency ranges. This means the body is stressed - temporarily this may have some positive
effect, in the long run however stress certainly reduces the quality of life, capacity for work and state of health.
